Our third Salt City DISHES community dinner/grantmaking event sold out — in a record two days.
Daylight Blue Media’s gorgeous teaser video gives a fantastic sense of how the dinners feel, and how many people come together to make the event possible. Later this week, I’ll post photos of the event and an update about the community project that takes home $1000.

“Healing is much more holistic than just pills, machines, or shots,” says Brown. “The ancient Greeks knew this, but we somehow lost track: You’ve got to heal the spirit as well as the body.”

There may be nothing more thrilling than the best-of-summer-reading lists that come out around Memorial Day. The list-making is infectious; just the other day a friend and Innovation Trail reporter came by to brainstorm best-of Central New York literature. (My suggestions: Pnin and Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me.)
In the spirit of book-list mania, as well as my own recent winning-streak of reading truly excellent books, I’ve put together a list of summer reading. I’ll be adding to this over the next few months, so if you’re looking for inspiration, check back for updates.

Many thanks to the sponsors, presenters, volunteers, and attendees who made the May 1st Salt City DISHES a success. Bikes 4 Peace won $1000, which the group plans to put toward expanding the free bike clinics it offers to local kids. If you weren’t able to attend, you can check out behind-the-scenes photos here, or see some beautiful photos and read a great wrap-up of the event here. More photos after the jump.

We’ve had a great response from the Syracuse community about the debut DISHES dinner. The winning presenters, SUBPAR, are currently scouting locations to install ceramic tiles. And last week Briana, Stasya and I sat down with Red House Arts Radio to talk about the event. You can hear the interview here.
The next event is slated for Sunday, May 1. For more details, check out saltcitydishes.blogspot.com.

Every year, World Press Photo awards prizes for the year’s “best” photojournalism. The problems of such a contest are myriad, not least because of the difficulties inherent to photojournalism, a documentary form so easily subject to manipulation (by photographers, editors, and viewers alike) that nevertheless intends to reveal “truth.” But at a time when camera phones and digital cameras are turning us all into documentarians—a world in which the New Republic’s Jed Perl asks whether photojournalism is a thing of the past—can World Press Photo’s award-winning images show us anything we don’t already know?
